Position summary

The Team Lead – Engineering will be responsible for ensuring technical excellence while leading and mentoring the development team. This is a player-coach role involving both hands-on development and technical leadership. The position will oversee system architecture, establish engineering standards, and guide the team in building scalable ERP systems, case management platforms, and AI-powered legal technology solutions. The role also ensures adoption of modern engineering practices and AI-driven product development aligned with organizational goals.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead system architecture, technical design, and technology selection across all products.

  • Establish and enforce coding standards, code review processes, and engineering best practices.

  • Write production-quality code for complex features and core system components.

  • Conduct code reviews and provide technical guidance to improve team performance and code quality.

  • Lead architectural reviews and ensure scalability, performance, and maintainability.

  • Evaluate and integrate AI technologies including LLMs, embeddings, and machine learning capabilities.

  • Debug complex technical issues and ensure system reliability and performance.

  • Build and maintain APIs, backend services, and AI-powered integrations.

  • Track technical progress and ensure alignment with product and organizational priorities.

Requirements

Experience

  • 5+ years of software development experience, with at least 2 years in a Technical Lead or Senior Developer role.

  • Proven experience leading and mentoring development teams.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering scalable production systems.

  • Experience establishing engineering standards, architecture, and development processes.

Technical Skills

  • Strong proficiency in Python (FastAPI, Django, or similar frameworks).

  • Working knowledge of PHP/Laravel.

  • Experience with React and modern JavaScript frameworks.

  • Strong understanding of clean architecture, SOLID principles, and design patterns.

  • Experience with database design and optimization (PostgreSQL, MySQL).

  • Experience designing APIs (REST, GraphQL) and integrating distributed systems.

  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.

AI and Emerging Technology Skills (Essential)

  • Experience integrating LLM APIs such as OpenAI or similar platforms.

  • Understanding of RAG architectures, embeddings, and vector databases.

  • Ability to evaluate and implement AI solutions in production systems.

  • Strong interest in AI-driven product development and innovation.

Additional / Preferred Skills

  • Experience with ERP systems, legal tech, or case management platforms.

  • Knowledge of data engineering, ETL pipelines, or business intelligence systems.

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Experience working in non-profit, social impact, or mission-driven organizations.

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and team management skills.

Core responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of developers, supporting their technical and professional growth.

  • Balance hands-on development with leadership responsibilities to ensure delivery and quality.

  • Collaborate with Product Management on sprint planning, estimation, and technical roadmap.

  • Drive engineering strategy, architecture decisions, and technical innovation.

  • Establish scalable development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps best practices.

  • Evaluate build vs. buy decisions and recommend appropriate tools, frameworks, and platforms.

  • Ensure adoption of AI-first development practices and integration into core products.

  • Remove technical blockers and maintain team productivity and delivery timelines.

  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
