Job Summary: The Laboratory Attendant is responsible for providing support services to the laboratory by maintaining cleanliness, assisting in sample handling and transportation, ensuring proper waste disposal, and supporting laboratory staff in daily operations. The role ensures a safe, hygienic, and organized laboratory environment in compliance with infection prevention and biosafety standards.

Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan, is looking for a competent Laboratory Attendant based at RHC Shagram, Upper-Chitral in Chitral Region. 

Key Responsibilities:

A. Laboratory Support and Assistance

  • Assist Laboratory Technician in routine laboratory activities as assigned.
  • Support in arrangement and cleaning of laboratory equipment and working areas.
  • Assist in preparation of laboratory materials such as slides, containers, and sample tubes under supervision.
  • Help in organizing laboratory supplies and ensuring items are available when needed.

B. Sample Handling and Transportation

  • Assist in collection and transportation of laboratory samples (blood, urine, stool, sputum, etc.) from OPD/wards to laboratory.
  • Ensure proper labeling and safe handling of samples during transportation.
  • Deliver reports/results to concerned departments when required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient samples and laboratory reports.

C. Cleaning and Maintenance of Laboratory Area

  • Maintain cleanliness of laboratory rooms, working benches, and washing areas.
  • Clean glassware and laboratory utensils (test tubes, beakers, slides, etc.).
  • Ensure laboratory water supply and drainage areas remain clean and functional.
  • Support cleaning of equipment exteriors and safe storage areas.

D. Infection Prevention and Biosafety

  • Follow infection prevention and biosafety protocols while working in laboratory.
  • Ensure safe disposal of laboratory waste and contaminated materials.
  • Assist in proper segregation of waste including sharps, infectious waste, and general waste.
  • Support cleaning and disinfection of laboratory surfaces using approved disinfectants.
  • Use PPE (gloves, masks, apron) as required.

E. Store and Stock Support

  • Assist in receiving and arranging laboratory supplies in the store area.
  • Support maintenance of stock and report shortages to Lab Technician.
  • Assist in checking expiry dates of laboratory consumables and reagents.

F. Coordination and Other Duties

  • Coordinate with OPD, wards, and other departments for sample collection and report delivery.
  • Assist during emergency cases and high workload periods.
  • Support lab staff during audits, inspections, and supervision visits.

Perform other duties assigned by Lab In-Charge or Facility Management relevant to laboratory operations.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Matric education
  • Minimum 1–2 years’ Experience in hospital/laboratory support work will be an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of cleanliness, hygiene, and waste management preferred
  • Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.
  • Strong integrity with the sensitivity to manage confidential information.
  • Demonstrates superior organizational skills and the agility to multitask and assume changing strategic responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Possesses strong integrity, intellectual humility and demonstrable expertise in navigating ambiguity and constant change.
  • Shows resilience, flexibility and perseverance, especially during challenging periods.
